BROADCAST JOURNALISM

While broadcast journalism is not the area I am most proficient in, I have enjoyed every experience I have had with it. I value the style as rapidly growing due to its engaging manner and appeal to the young generations. This makes it even more valuable to my program because I want to appeal to our audience of high school students. Because of this, I try to contribute to our growing broadcast brand in any way I can.

QFAB

This was my first broadcast video and it was an amazing experience. I greatly enjoyed getting to go around with my fellow staff members and try different milkshakes. I planned and recorded nearly all of the clips used in the video, but had so much film that we couldn't use it all! I also assisted in the editing process through iMovie, helping pick clips and organizing them. Overall, this was a great learning and team building experience.

Letter to My Younger Self

Recording a podcast was harder than I imagined it being. I thought that I would be able to sit down, speak and be done. However, this was not the case. Writing the script came naturally due to its similarities to blogs, but that is the only thing that went smoothly. Sitting at a microphone and speaking was really awkward and I kept messing simple words up, causing me to have to re-record multiple times. During the editing process, I couldn't find the perfect music and I didn't love having to listen to my own voice. Once I finished, I was extremely proud of the product because of the effort that went into the creation process.

Broadcast edits

One of my first experiences with broadcast was having to edit one. I wasn't sure where to start at first, but I quickly figured out that the most efficient way to give feedback was to create a document with exact timestamps and feedback to help the staffer make the edits and understand what I was referencing. While the video didn't end up getting published, I was still able to help the staffer grow from the experience and teach her what to look out for in her future videos.

Broadcast/podcast checklists

At the beginning of the year, I revised all of the checklists with updated expectations for the school year. I found new examples that the staff could reference for various types of broadcast videos and podcast to assist them in their own product. I also made ODYSSEY style regulations for broadcast videos more clear such as how to format names and titles on the video. I wanted to help staffers succeed more with their videos and podcasts by giving them a better set of guidelines and expectations.

Broadcast notes

At the fall 2023 National High School Journalism Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, I attended a session by Ken Kerbs on his experience with broadcast. I have attended a few broadcast sessions at state and regional conventions, but this was by far the most informative and engaging presentation. I loved getting to hear about his life as a broadcast journalist and the opportunities available to him. It fueled my interest in creating and supporting broadcast!
